ONE DAY PROJECTS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL ART CLASS

Creative Combines

Matt Milkowski
with students at Kenwood Academy, Chicago

Challenge: Students create a split screen artwork by photographing 2 unexpected objects and composing them to share the same silhouette.

Materials: phones with cameras and a collage app such as Instacollage

Process:
Students work in groups, with at least one camera phone per group.
• Groups hunt around the room or school for object pairs that share similar silhouettes/shapes, but are otherwise unrelated.
• Using a collage app such as InstaCollage, move and compose the subjects until the edges of both align. The final image will only show half of each original subject, but should appear to be one new, unified subject.

Lesson Expansion:
Instead of using the 2 panel split screen, repeat with 3 or more panels
• Make students choose a random object out of a box, and then go hunt/find its counterpart
• Repeat process by photographing old student drawings or sketches to create new hybrid drawings
